The never ending debate about boarding schools
Posted Monday, January 30, 2006 2:00:23 PM by Alex Molin

Boarding schoolsMany parents find themselves straggling, at one stage or another, with the disturbing question: should I send my children to a boarding school? If the answer is YES, the straggle continues: should I send my child to a Christian boarding school?

Should I send him to a Military boarding school and so on and on… Although the second question is not less important, I think, once you know what you want it's easier, therefore I will go back and deal with the first one.

Let's start with the Pros:

Boarding school is not what they used to be - today's boarding schools set some great challenges for children.

Boarding school is a great solution if parents have to relocate to a different place due and want to maintain their child surroundings and the level of stability they got to know. Boarding schools offer additional activities thus allowing teens to find their interests and potential easier.

Now for the Cons:

Sending your child to a boarding school meaning you'll have less time to spend with him during these very important years in their lives, in which they establish their personality, and you might want to contribute to that a little. And maybe the strongest con is simply the unbearable feeling of homesickness.

When taking into consideration all the above to forget to relate to your child's personality, emotional needs, the quality and environment of the boarding school being considered, the type of the school, how far it is from home your commitment as a parent to stay in close touch with your child

Royal's home turf a snapshot of a future France?
Posted Tuesday, February 06, 2007 1:10:16 PM by Blog57 Team
FOR the past three years, Segolene Royal has ruled over a picturesque French region best known for its goat's cheese, Cognac and beautiful coastline. Now the Socialist leader is bidding to extend her reign across France as the country's first woman president, and she hopes to take many of her regional inventions with her. Royal, 53, running in a tight race against conservative candidate Nicolas Sarkozy, has said she wants to make France fairer, greener and more transparent, but has refused thus far to outline concrete proposals on many issues. To gauge what might follow the campaign rhetoric, analysts point to her policies in western Poitou-Charentes, a region based midway along France's Atlantic Coast. Promising a "more efficient society", Royal has made regional aid subject to firms promising not to lay off workers, subsidised energy-saving initiatives and introduced a touch of grassroots democracy at schools....

Students don't have pencils, running water or restrooms at the Three Little Flowers Center in a remote village in Haiti, where the operating annual budget is $3,000. At the private Pine Crest School in Fort Lauderdale, students excel in advanced-placement courses, advertise their college plans on Yale sweat shirts, and see their parents come up with $17,890 a year in tuition. On Wednesday, the two schools found common ground: author Edwidge Danticat, who announced a partnership that will allow Pine Crest students to raise money for Three Little Flowers Center. ''I am hoping this morning begins a conversation between your school and a school that's in Haiti,'' Danticat told an auditorium full of students. During a Black History Month program at Pine Crest Wednesday, Danticat also discussed her works Krik? Krak! and Behind the Mountains, told students about her first impressions of moving from Haiti to the United States at 12, promoted a new memoir and talked about black Americans' interest in Haiti....

Uganda: Banjo Gets His Christmas Gift

It was one of the most interesting things to happen in the history of Pooka Boarding Primary Schools! Pupils and teachers alike had never seen the whole headmaster -- Chiluba with his 'heavy' stomach and huge size racing after a naughty boy. Chiluba chasing little Banjo was like a huge fox hunting down a tiny wild rabbit. During the chase, Chiluba tripped and fell over several times like sacks of potatoes but was up again determined to catch Banjo. ....

GOVERNMENT has set new school fees and levy structures for all the 61 private schools in Zimbabwe for January next year and threatened forfeiture to the State any extra money charged on pupils, while the school authorities would be jailed for periods not exceeding six months if the directive is defied. But the announcement is likely to torch another impasse with the Association of Trust Schools, an umbrella body grouping private schools. ....

CONCORD, N.H. Saint Paul's School in Concord (New Hampshire), one of New England's elite private boarding schools, is promising a free education to students whose families earn 65 thousand dollars or less a year. The school hopes to attract more high-performing students from lower-income families. It is following the trend of elite universities, such as Harvard and Princeton, that guarantee free tuition to children of less affluent families, as long as they meet academic requirements. Tuition, room and board, and mandatory fees at Saint Paul's next year will be about 38 thousand dollars. Copyright 2006 Associated Press. All rights reserved. Presence not presents

After doing their job of raising their children well, sending them to the best schools and colleges, marrying them off and helping them build a home of their own, parents are at a lost on what to do next and where to go from there. 'Will you still need me, will you still feed me, when I'm sixty-four?', The Beatles famous song explicitly evince what lies in the heart of each and everyone who's at the age when the fear of neglect, lack of love and lack of respect creeps in. From their cramped two bedroom flat in Kodambakkam, octogenarian couple, Rangarajan and Lakshmi now live in a 1,500 sq ft deluxe apartment at an exclusive home for the aged in the city suburb. A high-ranking insurance executive during his younger days, Rangarajan feels sad to live a life away from his friends in the city, but there seems to be no other choice for him and his wife, a former teacher....

Ministers look to boarding schools to keep pupils out of care
Posted Friday, November 10, 2006 1:27:39 PM by Blog57 Team
Boarding schools could be an effective way to support children from broken homes, the children's minister Beverley Hughes said today as she announced a new project aimed at keeping young people out of care. Ms Hughes said the government pathfinder project would investigate provision for young people with multiple needs and those from troubled families across local education authorities. The announcement follows comments from the education secretary, Alan Johnson, last month, who said schools could be ordered to give places to children in care, even if they were full. A green paper on children in care in England, published last month, proposes putting an expectation on councils to place such children in the best local schools. Other educational ideas include having a headteacher in each area to oversee the progress of vulnerable pupils, and £2,000 bursaries to ease their path to university....

Governor dodged a wave

Leaving for a Mexican trade trip Wednesday, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger said Tuesday's election was a mandate for Republicans and Democrats to continue working together to address issues ranging from the health care to prison construction. The Republican governor said he was "over the moon" with happiness about his 17-point victory over Democrat Phil Angelides and the success of the bond measures he backed. "This was not a vote for me," he said at the Santa Monica Airport shortly before boarding a plane to Mexico. "This was letting us know we need to go in the same direction ... and do what is best for the state of California." ....

Boarding school to replace local care

Children from problem families will be offered places in top boarding schools under a scheme that aims to prevent them being taken into local authority care. Between 150 and 200 children are expected to benefit, including some with behavioural problems or special needs, as well as those living in families that are at a high risk of breakdown after the death or departure of one parent. ....

At the Potomac Avenue Metro one morning last week, Robert C. Bobb, a candidate for D.C. Board of Education president, looked for voters willing to talk about education. Dozens of people whizzed by, but Sheila Savage marched up to the 61-year-old Louisiana native and fired off questions. "What are you going to do for the school system? I'm sure you know it's in bad shape," Savage said. ....
