In recent years many families made a decision - their children will learn at home. Home schools are becoming more and more popular due to many advantages it offers: You can expose your children to many subjects they can't be exposed to at conventional schools.

THome schoolhe learning time is flexible hence allowing your child to meet more people and see more places instead of being locked in a classroom half day. You'll get a chance to help them format their personality, in those critical years.

You can show them your point of view; spend quality time with them broaden their horizons make sure they eat right and take a significant part of their development. (A parent's wet dream). Your child will grow up and become an open person, someone who can accept different approach and will probably have developed self learning skills.

The major advantage of homeschooling is its flexibility. For example: you can take off season family vacations, which will probably be cheaper, and you'll be able to spend a lot of quality time with your family, occupying yourselves with fun activities together.

Leave your hat at home or in the car if you plan to attend an Austin or Decatur high school basketball game this season. On Tuesday, the Decatur City Board of Education banned baseball caps, toboggans, bandanas and any other headgear as a part of new game procedures for the 2006-07 season. The game procedures, recommended by a committee of administrators and basketball coaches, include selling admission only to the gymnasium's seating capacity and banning loitering. Sportsmanship and crowd control also will be emphasized. $1 admission hike The school board approved a $1 admission increase to $5 to offset the cost of doubling the number of security guards from two to four. Superintendent Sam Houston said the rules apply only to high school games, although a middle school committee is considering many of the same rules....

Far from home

Magda Pride is one of nine children, all of whom were schooled at home. When it came time for her to choose a college, she didnt intend to stray far from her parents and siblings; her first two choices were schools she could commute to every day. Prides plans began to change when Columbia College contacted her mother, who publishes a magazine called Practical Homeschooling. Administrators wanted the magazine to help get the word out about Columbia Colleges home-school-friendly application process. Pride attended an information session, then participated in a round of essays and interviews. Pride, who didnt start reading until she was 8 years old because she is dyslexic, ended up qualifying for a full scholarship, more financial aid than any other school had offered her. She is now in her first year, studying forensic science....

Covered Bridge home has historic touches

Bonnie Dickinson loved her historic home in Belleville, but she and her husband, Bill, wanted a bigger yard for their son, Jared. So the Dickinsons bought a 3-acre lot in Covered Bridge Estates east of town, built a 4,086-square-foot home and reproduced some of their favorite historic features. They chose rough-finish red brick for the exterior. They installed high ceilings and plenty of cherry stained woodwork, including crown moldings. They put a small butler's pantry between the kitchen and dining room and a sun room overlooking the wooded back yard. "I love fireplaces, and we have four of them," said Bonnie, who helps with her husband's accounting firm in Fairview Heights. "I really wanted a fireplace in the kitchen." The Dickinsons are selling the 12-year-old home and downsizing now that their three sons are grown....

CINCINNATI -- The $1 billion plan to replace and rebuild public schools in Cincinnati keeps getting cut back as the city's student population declines. Enrollment in Cincinnati Public Schools was more than 50,000 a decade ago. Planners said student population could fall to about 28,000 in the next seven years. ....

South Salem High School took third place and Sprague High took home the exhibition award in the Oct. 28 Pacific Coast Invitational, which drew 10 schools from throughout the state and more than 800 student musicians. The 25th annual PCI marching band competition, sponsored by Sprague High Band and Colorguard Boosters, took place at Willamette University's McCulloch Stadium under clear skies. Families and fans filled the covered stands. This is the first year that the invitational has been held at McCulloch Stadium. Organizers said it will serve as the future venue for the competition. Last year, rain turned Sprague's football field into a soggy mess, and no bands marched in the final competition because of safety concerns. "I'm just stoked," said PCI chairwoman Katie Such....

Internet: Home access is on the rise in India
Posted Monday, November 06, 2006 3:23:42 AM by Blog57 Team
Though the Cyber Cafes or Public Access points, with a 39 per cent share of users, continue to be the most important Internet access points in India, home access is on the rise, according to a study jointly carried out by the Internet And Mobile Association of India (IAMAI) and IMRB International. The study -- Internet in India - however suggests that this dominance may be short-lived, since the share of cyber cafes has been steadily declining from 52 per cent in 2003 to the present status. On the other hand, access from home, has steadily risen from 23 per cent in 2003 to 31 per cent in 2006. The gain in the home access segment is attributed to the loss of `market share' by cyber cafes. One of the most significant finds of the study was that access from schools and colleges remained insignificant at 6 per cent....

Few regulations exist for local home schools

Religious beliefs and concerns over the quality of public education are just a few of the many factors parents cite as impacting their decision to home-school their children. Home-schooling allows them to choose their curriculum and amend it to fit their child's learning style.Georgia state law does little to mandate how parents conduct home study programs. Other than required monthly attendance reports, parents don't have to demonstrate their child is meeting state standards for education. Barbara Stevens, social worker and home school liaison for the school system, said the children must take a state-graded test every three years, but there are no ramifications if the child doesn't pass."When a parent withdraws their child from the public system, they take on full responsibility for their education," said Stevens....

Schools open amid security

On Monday, most schools were closed, fearing violence, while those that were open did not conduct regular classes. "Kids who stay very near to school turned up on time but our PTA members later decided that we should close. School was accordingly shut later in the morning. However, till the time it was kept open, no regular classes were held as kids were mostly engaged in extra-curricular activities," said Usha Ram, principal, Laxman Public School. At various bus stops, kids were left stranded as school buses failed to show up. Private bus operators had also refused to run their vehicles. "We kept waiting for our school bus till 8 am but when it didn't turn up, we had no option but to go back home," said Anuj Acharya, student, Gyan Bharati Public School. Students who commute by DTC buses, however, reached school on time....
